First review of badmammal’s ‘desobrigamento’

Naming a collection of tracks should ideally be impulsive, not absurd. Nonetheless, there rises anonymity and mysticism with abstraction. In the IDM fraternity, you have the daftness of Venetian Snares’ “Cavalcade Of Glee (And Dadaist Happy Hardcore Pom Poms)” to compete with for wacky caricatural merit. Or consider Mu-Ziq’s “Duntisborne Abbots Soulmate Devastation Technique”.

What these works have in common is as far-reaching as it is implicit – they stretch the intelligent dance music tag to familiar limits, with breakbeat foreplay or chilled quirkiness, and are peppered with references to earlier forays from both camps, not forgetting displaying production skills as a counterweight.

Badmammal’s fourth self-released tapestry from goodluck/badluck, “Desobrigamento” comes as an axis in the middle of these goalposts. Happiness is a tangible objective – it’s often about how much you invest, but nevertheless you won’t always get the rewards. This can frustrate, lead to insecurity and cause you to dumb down your aspirations.
